Araijeet Singh Hundal Fulfills Father’s Dream, Shines in Men’s FIH Pro League

Araijeet Singh Hundal has been living his father’s dream of representing the national team. Hailing from Amritsar, Punjab, the 20-year-old forward made his senior debut for the Indian men’s hockey team against South Africa in January this year. Since then, Hundal has continued to shine, participating in nine more matches and leaving a significant impression on the international stage, particularly in the Men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24.

Hundal’s journey to the senior team has been nothing short of remarkable. With an impressive record of scoring 21 goals in just 28 outings for the Indian junior men’s hockey team, his talent was undeniable. Transitioning to the senior team, Araijeet has already netted two goals in 10 appearances. Both goals came during the Antwerp stage of the Men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24, against formidable teams like Argentina and Belgium.

Reflecting on his experience in the Pro League, Araijeet expressed his excitement and growth: “This is the first time I am playing in the Pro League outside of India, and having scored two goals in four matches, I feel it has been an exceptional experience. The crowd and atmosphere here in London are splendid, and I would love to score a few goals at this stage as well.”

Beyond scoring goals, Hundal has used this opportunity to learn and adapt to the highest level of play. “I have gained knowledge about the style of play at the highest level, which has helped me better grasp the game. I have also identified areas where I can improve, and I am eager to try and fix them in the rest of the matches and during training later,” he noted.

At such a young age, Hundal already exhibits a multifaceted skill set. He is not only tall, strong, and quick but also a natural goal threat. Furthermore, he is emerging as a proficient drag-flicker, a skill typically developed by defenders. This unique combination of attributes has earned him a place in the 27-member Indian men’s hockey team that is gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The support from senior team members has been pivotal in Hundal’s seamless transition to the senior level. “Seniors in the team have constantly reassured the youngsters that there is no pressure on us. They have given us the freedom to play how we want, which will help us play to our maximum potential,” Hundal shared. This encouragement has allowed young players like Hundal to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the team’s efforts.

With only two matches remaining in the FIH Pro League 2023-24, Hundal and his teammates are brimming with confidence. These matches have not only tested their strategies but also prepared them for the upcoming Olympics. “We had some ideas that worked out and some that didn’t, but ultimately, the results have increased our confidence. It is also a great opportunity to see how the other teams are lining up and is the best way to prepare for the Olympics,” Hundal explained.

As the Indian men’s hockey team prepares to face Germany in their next match on June 8, the focus remains on finishing the Pro League campaign on a high note. “We are playing every match with our heads held high and aim to finish this Pro League campaign in the same fashion,” Hundal concluded.
