Runner-up of 1997 US Open Greg Rusedski reckons that the World no.1 Novak Djokovic could go on to win five or even six slams in a row. Djokovic has already won three consecutive majors in the ongoing season and he is chasing Calendar slam in the ongoing US Open.
The last player to win the Calendar slam was Rod Laver, who had won it back in 1969 and Djokovic has a chance to join the elite club of Don Budge and Rod Laver. The Serbian has been in sublime form and it will be a difficult task for the next generation to put the brakes on him.
If Djokovic wins the US Open, not only he will become the third Men’s player to win a Calendar slam but also he will become the player with the most major titles (21).
Djokovic has also won the Australian Open on nine occasions and has won the title in Melbourne in the last three editions. Thus, Djokovic will have a great chance to make it five in a row if he goes all the way in the US Open.
“(On the Calendar Slam) Federer hasn’t done it, Nadal hasn’t done it. Rod Laver was last to do it in 1969, and also when Rod did it – three of the surfaces were grass and one was clay,” Rusedski told Express Sport.
“So for him [Djokovic] to do it in the same year is extraordinary. Plus, he breaks the record of most Slams in the men’s game, and then he goes to his favorite Grand Slam in Australia – so he could go five, or even six [Slams] in a row.”
Djokovic will take on world number 121 Tallon Griekspoor in the second round at Flushing Meadows. The Serbian defeated Danish qualifier Holger Rune in four sets in the opening round to inch one step closer to history.
